Katrina Relief has been offered the opportunity to utilize a commercial sawmill that is set up and operational. The logs are all stacked on-site ready to go.
What we are in desperate need of is a volunteer who has experience running the machinery for such a mill or a person who is willing to come on down and receive training from the manufacturer of the mill equipment. A training schedule is being set up at this time and we need feed back as soon as possible on this.
What this mill will be providing to us is the lumber, free of charge, to construct homes here in Hancock County . We are planning on focusing on smaller homes we have been specializing in. The criteria is elderly, disabled, and single parent families.
We currently have one volunteer who has stepped up and will be running the machinery two days a week and we have some people signed up for the training class. Since this is a long term project - we are going to need more volunteers trained to run the equipment along with a support staff of four more volunteers.
Prior to this we had built one other home out of rough cut lumber and now it is almost complete with the owners already residing in the home. Without that lumber we would never have been able to build that home as the owners had slipped between the cracks of FEMA. The owner of that home has stepped up to the plate and he is the one volunteering to work the mill two days a week. This is an excellent example of a local resident giving back to the community.
